A Special Christmas Celebration at the Boston Family Shelter

On Thursday, December 2, 2010, a group of 10 Mars Hill Fellowship members organized a Christmas Celebration for the residents of the Boston Family Shelter. The Boston Family Shelter is operated by Heading Home, Inc., a non-profit organization that provides emergency shelter, housing and supportive services for more than 1,500 homeless and low-income people each year.

According to statistics from the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless, over 52% of people who are homeless in Massachusetts during a year are actually parents and children --much higher than the national average.  The Boston Family Shelter caters specifically to women + children who are in need.

Through your support, Mars Hill Fellowship was able to provide the families:

  • A catered meal including roasted chicken breast, garlic mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables, bread and cupcakes.
  • A variety of games, crafts, and activities for the children
  • Christmas Carol sing-a-long led by members of the Mars Hill Fellowship Worship Team
  • Gift Bags for the residents including pocket bible, a personal prayer from Mars Hill Fellowship Church, and Gift Cards to Target.

The children were ecstatic as they heard the story of Christ’s birth and opened presents.  One child exclaimed, “This is the best gift I’ve ever gotten, thank you Jesus!”

We continue to pray for all of the residents of the Boston Family Shelter, that they would experience God’s love and grace during this holiday season.  We pray that the children would understand that they are fearfully and wonderfully made and precious in God’s sight.  Finally, we pray for the opening of permanent housing for the shelter’s residents.

Special thanks to the entire Mars Hill Fellowship Outreach Team under the leadership of Deacon Arlene Hudson.
